WHAT'S HAPPENING IN AUSTRALIAN CERAMICS?

This site is under construction. Come back soon for more!

"What's Happening in Australian Ceramics?" is a project led by Anne Sherman, a ceramic artist, educator, social researcher and evaluation specialist.

The project is inspired by Anne's experiences navigating transitions into Australian Ceramics after relocating from the US to Australia in 2019. Her inquiry is motivated by observations of cultural and structural differences within the ceramics communities. Her practice is informed by her experience conducting  social and environmental impact evaluations for government and not-for-profit organisations and her educational foundations in "human-centered design".

Anne's project seeks to gain insight into the unique challenges and opportunities of maintaining a vibrant ceramics ecosystem in Australia, initiate deeper conversations, and, ultimately, strengthen the position of ceramics within contemporary craft traditions nationally and internationally.

"What's Happening in Australian Ceramics?" will be shared as a series of articles in the Journal of Australian Ceramics across 2025. The first article, "What's Happening in Australian Ceramics? Part 1: Coming to Australia", will be published in April 2025; the following article will feature perspectives and insights from the Australian ceramics community.

If you'd like to contribute your voice to this part of the project by submitting a response to our national survey, please sign up to receive notifications about when the survey is open and other noteworthy updates and opportunities.
